Peking University
Portrait of the elusive Guangyuan Emperor Peking University known by the name of PBJ or ‘Chinese University’-is one of the most exclusive educational institutions of China. Its fame has reached to the world through the well-known educational mission undertaken by the late Premier Li Peng. In keeping with its mission, the school established a number of departments with the help of eminent scholars and outstanding personalities from various fields. In fact, Peking University-established by the late Premier Li Peng enjoys the prerogative of possessing the finest literary collection from China, besides being the house of some of the most eminent and noteworthy professors. Today Peking University is known as a major center for Chinese education, specializing in higher education with an international reputation.
The present Peking University was established in 1920 with the merger of several colleges under the name of’Beijing University’. The first National University of Education (NCU) was established at the same time. At present, Peking University is regarded as the first national university of China. It was also responsible for popularizing the degrees overseas, particularly in the USA. Numerous renowned graduates have come to make contributions in the fields of teaching and research in Peking University.
The teaching and research facilities in Peking University are spread over the main teaching and research complexes of Beijing University, the Central University of China (CAUCE), the Shanghai University, the School of Chinese Medicine and the Beijing Normal University. The main campus of Peking University is situated in the busy and densely populated beijing kong shui district. The central campus has three main complexes the Shanghai campus, the School of Chinese Medicine and the Beijing Normal University. All these complexes have been financed by the central government. Shanghai University is the main branch of Peking University. The third and last largest campus is located at the Dong Hu area.
Peking University has Chinese history as its major feature. The Peking History Museum and the Peking Foreign History Museum exhibit numerous exhibits about Peking’s ancient civilization and rich Chinese history. The Peking Foreign History Museum is also home to a world famous Egyptian bust. Peking University is extremely famous for its ancient and contemporary Chinese art. The numerous contemporary art galleries in Peking house some of the famous paintings of famous Chinese artists such as Wu Yi, Li Yang, Yinyao, Bian Ming and others.
Peking University has four Colleges International University, Dong Ju University, ZheJia University and the Beijing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. ZheJia University is the oldest and the largest of all the colleges. It is located in the heart of the business district of the city. It houses the internationally accredited Zheijang University of Traditional Chinese Medicine and is one of leading medical colleges of China. In the past, the International University was situated in the same place as the International University.
The International University is home to more than 200 faculties and over 40 departments. It offers courses in business, applied sciences, arts, education and computer science. The Beijing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine has been regarded as one of the top educational establishments in China. It is renowned for its applied sciences and health care programs. The various departments offer degrees in acupuncture, family medicine, English language and nutrition. It also offers degree courses in sports management and occupational therapy.
Peking University has excellent exposure to foreign languages and cultures and to foreign academic disciplines. Numerous Chinese speakers enroll in Peking University and most of them speak English. The Peking University has a fine tradition of independent research and contributes to the advancement of medical science. The Graduate School of Public Health under the faculty of medical studies is one of the major academic centers in China.
The Peking University is located in the core of the Chinese mainland in the vicinity of Beijing. The Zheijang Road is the main access point to the university. The Zheijang Road is well known as the ‘Heavenly Road’ as it links the scenic West Lake to the Huangpu River and the Yangtse River to the Gulf of Tonkin. The university is within a few minutes drive from the international airport of Beijing which is easily accessible by most of the flights into Beijing. Students can get access to the campus through the different bus services that are provided by the Peking University.
